Remodel Your Kitchen

Summertime is an ideal time to remodel your kitchen. Warm weather makes kitchen renovations easier because you can BBQ outside when the work is happening inside.

Planning for a new kitchen design is as important as the renovation itself. Before you get started, ask yourself:

• Do you have enough counter, cabinet and floor space?

• Does traffic flow? If there’s more than one cook in your house, make more room around the main workspace. If you enjoy entertaining, choose an open layout.

• Do you have kids? If so, add room for cooking and serving larger meals and lower cabinets for easier access to children’s food.

• Are your appliances efficient? Dated appliances may not be as energy efficient as some of the newer models on the market.

• Does your kitchen need to be accessible to individuals with disabilities? Will you be able to use your kitchen safely as you get older?

• Do you need to add a door to a new deck or move windows to manage light better?

Go green! Make your home energy-efficient

Earth-friendly products are available in a wider range of styles and costs than ever before. Below are just a few examples of ways you can help save energy in your home:

Appliances: When purchasing a new appliance for your kitchen, bath or laundry room, look for the Energy Star label that ensures that the appliance is 10-50 percent more efficient than standard models. Did you know that dishwasher drawers take up less space and use less water if you have to wash a small load?

Plumbing and heaters: Choose faucets with aerators, which inject air bubbles into the water stream to achieve the same pressure with less volume. Recirculation pumps keep hot water at the tap, saving hundreds of gallons per year by eliminating the need to run the tap while the water gets hot. Tankless hot water heaters also heat water at the source and save up to 20 percent.

Lighting: Avoid using recessed cans when installing lighting in your home unless they use fluorescent bulbs and are airtight. Otherwise, air can escape around the can and into the attic. Motion and occupancy sensors save money by automatically turning lights on and off as needed. And, consider fluorescents — high-quality, dimmable electrical ballasts–that won’t flicker.
